    Hello! Thanks for sharing and the information! I was able to take apart and clean the upper tension unit. The disks of the upper tension are different from yours . There are 3 disks, but with different groves. It doesn't have a stop waher. Neither a thumb nut with a pin on the back. Sad to report that the issue is not solved yet. Thank you so much for this video, I was able to clean the tension unit.

    Andy, this is fantastic of the complicated collection of Singer button holer options. I’m slowly venturing into the button hole attachments for use with my everyday working machines 201-2, 403, and 404. I have the 121795 and I LOVE it. It offers great control: length, bight, density, and inner gap. Best of everything to you! 🥰

      Thanks. They make beautiful buttonholes, IMO. My Grandma and Mom had a strip of fabric with button holes of each size. When they went to make buttonholes they could slip the button through the holes to determine the best size to use. My Aunt embroidered lace handkerchiefs and used the "eyelet" size buttonhole with great success in the corner area. Thanks for the comment, Bill, and for still watching my channel.

    I love this! I recently acquired a singer 500A. When I was cleaning it, I dropped it. Fortunately or possibly unfortunately it landed on my leg before it hit the floor. But since then, the hand wheel is sort of spins and never locks. Two screws fell out when I took the top off. I have no idea where they go and I don't know how to fix the hand wheel. You have a video that might help with this? Also the sliding bobbin cover fell off and I can't figure out how to get it back on without taking the whole thing apart. I've learned so much from your videos, I appreciate you sharing this information with us.

    Hello Mr. Andy! Thank you for the link of the hand wheel, I was able to install it correctly. I commented on another video that the machine has some tension problems. During a sewing test, the lower thread is loose, not as much as in this video. I checked the upper threading, and the only thing that I see different from the diagram in the owner's manual is the check spring that is loose

      ua-cam.com/video/d4k2wlDFsj0/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/v3VMouJyB9k/v-deo.html On the end of the Tension Post into the machine there is a plastic "Gear" that can crack. That gear is used to stop the Check Spring (takeup spring) from just spinning. I've had luck just squeezing the crack together and using super glue to hold it.

    Hey Andy, was wondering if there’s a video of the fashion mate 257. Can I remover the top gear on the original vertical shaft or do I need to change the shaft and gear? Thank you

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953 23 години тому

      I'll start by saying I've never worked on this model of Fashion Mate. I do know that Singer says you have to pull the gear & shaft out the top of the machine and that is a long involved process requiring a lot of disassembly of of the main arm shaft and most of what is connected to it. You can buy the gear/shaft from several sellers for $16 to $22. You can buy a guide that Terry wrote for $10 store.tandtrepair.com/252-257-tvgearguide.html I looked into doing this for a 353 Genie once and it's about 15 steps to remove then all those steps in reverse plus timing the hook (which is easy.) I will say that a couple of my viewers said they made a hole in the backside of their machine to get to the spot where the gear connects to the shaft. One said the old gear had set screws he removed and then change the gear as in my video: ua-cam.com/video/M3bFtlV1Y6s/v-deo.html The other viewer felt the first guys' gear had been replaced once before and that was why it had set screws. He said the gear on his 252 was held on by a roll pin he had to punch out. Then he had to install the new shaft from the bottom and slip the new gear onto it (difficult) and use the hole he made in the backside to install the set screw to hold the new gear onto the new shaft. Both guys said they would never do it again.

    Help please, I am perplexed. I have a 1942 featherweight. No problems in the past year if using. Regular grease/oil by myself. Yeaterday was chain sewing along and the fly wheel seized up. I immediatly stopped, took gib hook totally apart off of machine looking for a tiny piece of thread, or burr…none. So, i did a full maintenance. Today, chain sewing…froze again, took gib off and looked again, nothing. 30 minutes latwr, again…I took off the belt and the wheel spun freely, needle went up and down…put belt back on and it sewed fine for anout 30 minutes…took belt off, tried spinning motor post by hand, seemed a bit stipp but wasnt locked. Put belt back on and sewed for another hour+ just fine. Any thoughts of what is happening? Thank you.

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953 День тому

      Intermittent problems are often the hardest to track down. I can't really diagnose it without having the machine. I would think you are on the correct track by checking the hook and/or motor. There are not a lot of places on a featherweight to seize. You say the flywheel seized, but that is only what you see externally. It's puzzling that the machine starts to work Ok even though you do not find a cause for the stoppage. Only once did I find this seizure being caused by a motor. The motor shaft bearings were not being lubricated b/c the wool wicks had dried to a solid, hard condition and the motor lube could not wick down to the shaft/bearing. The bearings apparently overheated, expanded, and seized the shaft. After the motor cooled down it would run again. I have no idea if your motor has this problem, but it does have oil wicks, and if it is the original motor it is 80+ years old so it may be something to think about. Here is my 26-video Plaist for model 221: ua-cam.com/play/PLsCOZgzzaiKIA1OPw0k6QOSTE-wAUZ4kp.html Five of those videos are about rehabing the motor. You can also visit singer-featherweight.com/ They know more than anyone I can think of about the Featherweights. A wonderful family who have freely answered a few questions for me and bought and sold parts with me. They have a nice Schoolhouse section about maintenance and surely could advise you better than I can. Best of luck and please don't give up on the lovely machine.

      @@andytubesewing1953 thank you for taking your time to try and help. I will not give up! I have ever so gently used a pin to see is the wicks felt soft…I have not pushed them in, just sort of softly scraped and they felt soft. It doesn’t seem to soak up much grease though, so I’m taking care to watch. I have had two people recommend adding one drop of oil to each wick to soften the wicks, and one said to put two drops of kerosine in each port…I have not done either…quite cautious. This last time it bound, I was taking the belt off to see if the wheel rotates and I found that the belt had bunched up under that decorative flange, once off the wheel spun easily. I was able to rotate the shaft on the motor where the belt goes. I have re cleaned the gib hook and was careful to have that .003 space when putting it back on the shaft, which I had not taken care to do that before…and thankful I have not lost any of those itsy bitsy screws! Tightened the belt a little, put some corn starch on it…hoping that does it.

The Service Manual is only for the 237 and does not show the parts of the 237M for the Feed Throw-Out. Oddly, I have two parts diagrams, one for the 237 and the other for the 237M. I can't hit the LIKE button often enough for this very excellent educational video!!!! As Chickanic says in her videos, you have saved me time, money and frustration. Just this last week the timing went out on our machine, needle hitting metal. Found the top gear fine on one side and the teeth kind of mushy like old rubber on the other. No way for the gear on the horizontal shaft to engage it. No need for me to speed up the video, I paused it several times to look at our machine. I find it odd that the screw on the left goes into a speed nut rather than have the body of the machine tapped like it is for all the others. Our machine is in a cabinet, seems I might need my wife to hold the vertical shaft pulley while I put on the top gear, it is her machine so she can help ;). Our 457 doesn't have the top oil hole and has a plastic pulley on the bottom of the shaft. Part on order from Amazon. Amazing that these 45+ year old machines are still repairable. Thank you so very much for making the EXACT video I needed!

    Thank goodness for your videos - I have a 401M which I believe was made in Italy. It is running fairly well although I’m having trouble getting it to do a proper zig zag stitch. The manual says use BQ setting, which I’ve tried. It does do a zig zag but a multiple stitch version instead of one stitch to each point. It’s hard to explain. I’m hoping by watching your videos I might be able to get it working better. I hope you are in good health.

      Oh, those Italians! I did not know SInger made a 401M, but "M" is their designation for Monza, Italy so I guess they did. I don't know why they would make BQ the setting for regular ZZ. In all the 401 models I have seen (401A, 401G, etc) the setting is BL (BQ is for the multi-point ZZ as you mention. For stretch ZZ) Try the BL setting and see what happens. Yes, I have a few videos for the 401A & 403A ua-cam.com/play/PLsCOZgzzaiKLiDl9yFTP6mJgQmz5lj4NO.html ua-cam.com/play/PLsCOZgzzaiKKyqvdDRwS-9MfLuwSNJTcg.html The 401A playlist includes the camstack, followers, risers, etc. videos. Loose knobs can even throw off the dial settings. Sometimes the risers are dirty with old oil preventing the follower from rising to the correct pattern cam. Lots of moving parts on that model, isn't there? Hi andy. I have problem with my singer 974 machine. The timing is already adjusted properly, but the upper thread get tangled with the bobbin case and didn't get to bring up the lower thread.. what should i do?

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953 8 днів тому

      That model was not sold in the US and I've never seen it or worked on it. I found an instruction manual for it. I would start by being sure I had the correct bobbin for it. From what I can tell is should be a plastic Class 66 Singer bobbin with the curved sides. Singer has a Class 15 bobbin with straight side that is a little taller. If you used a Class 15 bobbin in a Class 55 machine the needle thread catches on the bobbin. If I found I DID have a Class 66 bobbin I would check that I had inserted the bobbin in the correct direction into the Bobbin Case and I had followed the correct path for threading the needle from the Spool Pin all the way to the Needle. That is all shown starting on page 25 of the Insruction Manual. Remeber, I;ve never seen a model 974 so I could be mistaken about the Class of Bobbin.

      @@jodiepotter6029 Oh! The famous Rocketeer model. Congratulations! What prevents the lever from being pushed back so you can turn the plastic nut is the pins that push up the needle plate are stuck with dried or very gooey oil. I turn the machine upside down and use a WD40 spray (or similar, even alcohol) with a little tube down into the pin and tube the pin sits in. If you can raise the needle plate a little you can put it in the top around the pins. This can soften the gunk and allow things to start moving. I have also used a hair dryer to heat the parts from underneath (not too hot on the plastic nut) which can soften the gunk. It should easily swing and then come back when you let go. If that works you'll need to look under the arm cover to see if the pattern cam is there and if the little follower arm is resting against the cam to follow the pattern.
